Istanbul, January 2011: Day 3

Our third day in Istanbul took us again down from Cihangir to the tram-line on Meclis-i-Mebusan Caddesi. We took the tram to Gülhane in search of the Hodja Pasa Cultural Center where we planned to buy tickets for the evening show of Dervish dance. The map on their web-site was not much help but eventually after asking a few people we found the place - and bought tickets for that evenings folk and belly dance show (next posting). The dervishes will have to wait till next time. Then we strolled around Sirkeci and Sultanahmet, had late lunch and were back to Hodja Pasa for the show.

However the first three photos were taken without going anywhere - from the apartment window in Cigangir. The balcony of the neighboring house, the laughing dove in front of the kitchen window and the view of the Marmara Sea at 10 am.

Again the Istanbul dogs. This is the same ruins and the same young dog I showed on Day 1 just down the hill. The dog was with three men apparently living in the ruins. I thought it made a great composition in the window.

The "Pudding Shop Lale Restaurant" at Sultanahmet. We ordered Mackerel, I ordered also some fried slices of patlican (eggplant) and bulgur. Delicious.

This photo of the Istanbul PTT Museum was taken by my daughter Pinja. Sometimes she is amazing - just taking the camera from me and showing with one shot how it should be composed.

Porkkalanniemellä kolmannen kerran

Tällä kertaa olin Porkkalanniemellä kuvausretkellä luontokuvauskurssin kanssa. Ensimmäisen kuvan aiheena on kallion kuviot ja vesi.

Edellisellä kerralla seurasin kauriiden vaarallista toikkarointia heikoilla jäillä. Yksi niistä ei sitten jollakin kerralla päässyt ylös jäistä - olisiko tämä sitten se, joka viimeksi toistuvasti putosi jäihin. Varo heikkoja jäitä!

Rantakäärmeet olivat heränneet.

Useimmat haahkat olivat optiikan ulottumattomissa, mutta tämä yksilö oli kuvausetäisyydellä.

Poislähtiessä huomasin autosta tämän hirven ja pysähdyin kuvaamaan senkin. Taitaa olla toistaiseksi paras hirvikuvani.

Uudestaan Porkkalaan

Ahtojää oli kuulemma tänään lähtenyt tuulen mukana merelle ja Porkkalanniemen edusta oli avoinna. Haahkaparvi majaili luodon vieressä. Perjantaiseen tapaan paikalla majaili myös kyhmyjoutsenia, mutta nämä ohilentävät olivat laulujoutsenia.

Lintuja ruokintapaikalla

Tänään oli mahtava maaliskuun aurinkoinen päivä, joten flunssasta huolimatta oli lähdettävä ulos. Keskuspuistossa olevan lintujen ruokintapaikalla käyminen oli sopivan haastavaa. Lähtiessäni pohdin ottaisinko täysikennoisen 5DMII:n, jolla yleensä kuvaan, vai kroppirungon 40D:n. Lintujen kuvaamisessa kroppirungossa olisi puolensa, mutta päädyin täysikennoiseen sillä ajatuksella, että kroppaan sitten kuvat normaaln 3000 pikseliä pitemmällä sivulla kokoon ja tutkin ovatko kuvat sillä tavalla tarkkoja. Alla olevat kuvat siis kaikki kropattu 5616 pikselistä 3000 pikseliin.

Tarkkuus ei mielestäni ole kuitenkaan huono. Alla olevaa kuusitiaista voisi verrata 2008 samalla paikalla otettuun kuusitiaiskuvaan. Nyt otettu ei ole ainakaan huonompi. Periaatteessa täysikennoisella pitäisi syvyystarkkuus myös olla kapempi täydellä aukolla, mistä voi olla etua.

Great Spotted Woodpecker / Käpytikka

We found two Great Spotted Woodpeckers (Dendrocopos major) with my daughter nesting just close by where we live. This one was just next to a path and people didn't seem to bother them.

Kaksi käpytikkaa pesi aivan kotimme lähellä - tämä pesä oli aivan polun vieressä.

Xiang Shan kukkula Taipeissa

Tulin Taipeihin sunnuntai iltapäivänä ja Shanghain jälkeen ei tehnyt mieli lähteä kävelemään enempiä katuja pakokaasujen katkuissa. Taipein kartasta huomasin, että kaupungin laitamilla on kävelyreittejä, joten katsoin lähimmän ja lähdin sinne. Paikka olikin lähellä Taipein uutta keskustaa ja 101 Buildingiä, kartan mukaan kukkulan tai reitin nimi oli Xiang Shan. Kun löysin oikean paikan totesin, ettei se oikeastaan ollutkaan polku vaan rappuset kukkulan rinnettä ylös. Portaissa olevien laattojen mukaan korkein kohta missä kävin oli 800 m korkeudessa. Korkeammallekin olisi päässyt, jos olisi viitsinyt ensin juosta yhden laakson alas. Puolessa välissä poikaporukka pyysi minua ottamaan heistä kuvan heidän Nikonillaan, joten pyysin heitä vastavuoroisesti ottamaan kuvan minusta taustalla kuuluisa 101 Building, joka taitaa edelleen olla maailman korkein rakennus. Paita on ainakin kiipeämisestä märkä.



Kukkulalta katsottuna koko kaupunki näyttää olevan melkoisessa saastepilvessä tai savusumussa. Sama ilmiö oli Shanghaissa, jossa keskustan pilvenpiirtäjät katosivat savusumuun, mutta siellä en saanut tilannetta kuvatuksi. Sinänsä Taipein ilma oli tällä kertaa hengitettävämpää kuin kaksi vuotta sitten, jolloin olin tukehtua mopojen pakokaasuihin. Liekö säätilasta kiinni.



Kukkulan laella kuulin pariinkin otteeseen varsin kuuluvaa - ehkä soitimeen liittyvää - linnun laulua. Eräs vanhempi nainen osoitti minulle lehvästöstä missä se lauleskeli ja kun seurasin sitä jonkin aikaa sain muutaman kuvan napattua, vaikka ei nyt mitään mestariotoksia. Mutta hienon näköinen lintu nimeltään mustakulmaseppä (Megalaima oorti), englanniksi Black-browed Barbet. Linnun määritys onnistui laittamalla Googlen kuvahakuun "green, bird, Taiwan".





Rinteellä kasvavat saniaispuut olivat kiehtovia. Valtavat lehdet kiertyvät auki niinkuin meikäläisetkin saniaiset

Kukkulalta löytyi myös viulisti, jonka seurassa oli eurooppalaisrotuinen didgeridoon soittaja ja kuvausryhmä. Ilmeisesti oli kyse Taiwanilaisittain hyvinkin tunnetusta teksasilaissyntyisestä "paluumuuttajasta", jonka nimi on "Janet Hsieh". Kuvaussessiota pysähtyivät kaikki ohikulkijat ihmettelemään.



Kun pääsin takaisin alas oli jo melko hämärää ja seuraavat kuvat on otettu ISO 1600 asetuksella. Siihen nähden hämmästyttävänkin tarkkoja. Pääkauppakadulla oli monenlaista ohjelmaa, mm pantomiimiesityksiä.

Ravintolan pöydästä tähtäilin 101 Buildingiä.

Hong Kong Wetland Park

The weather in Hong Kong wasn't too nice: just grey and occasionally raining. I happened to see an add of the Wetland Park on the train from the airport and decided to visit it. I don't have pictures of the building itself but the place is worth a visit. They show wetland habitats from around the world. They showed them in their pristine natural shape and I got a little irritated wondering if these people know nothing of what is happening in the world and how these ecosystems are being destroyed. But the second part of the exhibition took care of that very effectively telling in detail of all the problems mankind is causing. Apparently busloads of school kids visit the center so hopefully the message is going through. I was glad to see that they were recommending organic food as part of the solutions. I took a video clip with my Nokia N95 to show the scary tecno-atmosphere they have created.

The Wetland is just next to the Tin Shui Wai devlopment in the north-west part of Hong Kong. You can reach it by train and tram (last pic) - about 40 min from Hong Kong Island.



This bird is the "Common Snipe" (Gallinago gallinago) or "Taivaanvuohi" in Finnish, which translates to "Goat of the Skies". In the spring they fly high in the sky and cry like goats as a part of their courting behaviour. I presume they don't that in English speaking countries.









Black Faced Spoonbill (pikkukapustahaikara, Platalea minor) is an endangered species. A quarter of the population can be found in Hong Kong during migration.



Great Egret flying (Jalohaikara, Ardea alba) flying over the wetland. The exposure time is 1/1000 s which can just almost freeze the Pacific Swifts flying around catching insects.

The tram back to the center of Tin Shui Wai. Public transport is well organized and private cars are not common. I presume these skyscapers are a ecological way to live.

Karjalohja, Pappilanniemi

Vesilintuja Regents Parkissa - Waterfowl at Regents Park

Regents Park in the middle of London is quite an amazing place for birding. An amateur like me was able to get 26 species - mainly waterfowl - of birds in front of my camera just by visiting the lake at the park one afternoon and one morning, both times just about 1 hour. This was the 15th and the 17th March 2009. To see many of the birds it would otherwise be necessary to travel to various places around the world - of course in this case they are not in their natural habitat. I have added a few pictures below taken with my Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lense except for the landscapes which I took with the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM. I have added a list of all the species I spotted with my camera below the pictures in Finnish, Latin and English (pictures of the ones marked with a star). It did take a few hours to identify all of them. Obviously there where some additional species went undocumented as uninteresting so probably I could have easily spotted over 30 species.
