We were in Ireland for a week in July arriving into Dublin on the 21st and leaving from leaving from Rosslare in the south-east on the 29th. I have posted almost a hundred photos to my SmugMug site which is probably too many. In this posting I have chose just 12 of them.
Olimme Dublinissa vain päivän ja otimme perusturistibussikierroksen, jolla selvisi, että lähes kaikki Dublinin muistomerkit ovat jonkun hirtetyn itsenäisyystaistelijan kunniaksi. We left Dublin the next day and headed north-west to Donegal. We stopped at the Organic Center and then continued to Kilcar in Donegal. The sand in at the beach in Malin Beg.

Those following the financial news know about the huge bubble in the Irish construction sector. During the economic upswing in Ireland a huge amount of houses and apartments were built and now their values have collapsed. To me it appeared that this kind of traditional poor houses had all but disappeared. Many of the new houses didn't seem to fit into the landscape.
Irlannin rannikolla on kaikkialla vartiotorneja. Ne rakennettiin Napoleonin aikana 1800-luvun alussa siltä varalta että ranskalaiset yrittäisivät maihinnousua. Irlannissa olivat silloin vallassa englantilaiset ja katolilaisilla irlantilaisilla oli tukalat oltavat eikä mitään kansalaisoikeuksia. Irlantilaset ovat katolilaisia ja siksi ranskalaiset olivat heille luonnollinen liittolainen. Tällä kertaa Napoleon ei kuitenkaan tullut apuun.
Our purpose was to hike the Slieve League, which is supposed to be the highest cliff dropping directly into the ocean on the Irish coast. However the foggy weather was against us. Already at 100 meters it was so foggy you could see hardly a thing so it didn't seem like a good idea to climb up to 400 meters. So we had to satisfy us with the views at lower altitudes. The situation didn't get any better the next day.
Seuraavanakin päivän oli suunnitelmissa päivävaellys, mutta sumu oli sitä vastaan. Kävimme kylläkin 200 metrin korkeudessa aistimassa yhtä suoraan mereen 200 metristä putoavaa jyrkännettä, mutta näköaistista ei juuri ollut hyötyä. Päädyimme ajamaan autioituneeseen Portin kylääna autolla. Jyrkänteet täälläkin olivat vaikuttavat sumurajan alapuolellakin.

Nyt olemme siirtyneet etelämmäksi Galwayhin edelleen länsirannikolla. Etsimme - ja löysimme - sieltä luomulohen kasvattamon. Kuvassa kuitenkin paikallisen ravunpyytäjän vene. We were not quite satisfied with weather in Donegal and Galway. When we heard from the weather forecast that the weather was better on the south coast we decided to drive there. We drove to Dingle in Kerry county where the weather actually was much better. We took a boat trip to the Great Blasket Island. The two next photos are from that trip.
